…in Greek, ‘nostalgia’ literally means, ‘the pain from an old wound.’ It’s a twinge in your heart, far more powerful than memory alone. This device isn’t a spaceship; it’s a time machine. It goes backwards, forwards, it takes us to a place where we ache to go again. It’s not called the Wheel; it’s called a Carousel. It lets us travel the way a child travels - around and around, and back home again…to a place where we know we are loved.
Don Draper, Mad Men
I’ve always thought about the images in my Carousel series as sort of family vacation photos. When it came time for me to come up with a name for it, I kept thinking about that iconic image of vacation photo slide shows being shown with carousel projectors. So that’s where the name came from.
I had then just finished my internship with Greg Miller and ran the title by him. He told me about this Mad Men episode, which made me very curious. So I finally (almost two years later) sat down and watched the entire series. When I saw this episode, I was really moved by Don Draper’s pitch and really glad that I went with the title, Carousel.
